SLAKTHUSOMRÅDET, STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN - SPRING 2017
The Project started with an analyzes of an article by Mats Lieberg about Teenagers in the city and the public space. It talks about adolescent as a time of transaction from childhood to the adult world. A time to identify oneself. It also talks about how different groups av teenagers uses the public space. One of the groups often comes back to the same space wither another uses the space that is available at that moment. Regardless what group the teenager is in, according to Lieberg, all teenagers need to types of public space, On Stage and Back Stage. They need to have access to on stage areas where they can be a part of the play a role and be seen in the whole ensemble, but not identified. The back stage is a place where they can be invisible and uncontrolled by the adult.
There is a big problem to design a high school with Mats Lieman's text in mind since the high school is the embodiment of the adult world's control over teenagers. Students would most probably not use the building as their back stage, but could the buildings visual design come from the text from Lieman? The communication in the building is a ramp to resemble the street of the city with the different functions as library and classrooms being as squares and courtyards. Making all the walls out of glass blocks the visual effect that you would see that someone is on the other side of the wall, but you could never identify who it is because crucial features are blurred out. The individuals become visually unidentifiable.
